prof. Attaya Suvannasankha

Attaya Suvannasankha, MD is a physician-scientist and the Harry and Edith Gladstein Professor of Cancer Research and Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology, Department of Medicine, at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana. She serves as Program Lead for the Multiple Myeloma Program at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center and is a staff physician at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, where she also co-chairs the Hematologic Malignancy Working Group within the health system.

Dr. Suvannasankha’s research program focuses on mechanisms of therapeutic resistance in multiple myeloma, with particular emphasis on the bone marrow microenvironment and myeloma-associated bone disease. Her laboratory has developed biologically relevant tumor–bone co-culture and preclinical models to study tumor–host interactions, skeletal complications, and resistance to novel therapies. This work has been supported by sustained extramural funding, including active Veterans Affairs Merit Award support, enabling long-term investigation of translational strategies to improve treatment efficacy.

Her clinical research integrates laboratory discovery with early- and late-phase clinical trials of novel agents and immunotherapies for patients with relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma, incorporating correlative and biomarker-driven studies. She is actively involved in multicenter collaborative research and serves as Chair of the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium Myeloma Working Group. Dr. Suvannasankha’s work is directed toward bridging science and patient care to improve durability of response and outcomes in multiple myeloma.
