prof. Gösta Gahrton

Gösta Gahrton MD PhD is professor emeritus at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.
He graduated at the University of Lund in 1959 and moved to the Karolinska Institute in1961
where he was appointed professor of medicine and Head of the Department of Medicine at the
Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge in 1985.He has been chairman of the Nobel
committee at the Karolinska Institute, President of the European Society for Blood and Marrow
Transplantation (EBMT) and the World Marrow Donor Association ( WMDA ). He is honorary
member of many societies, among them the EBMT, the Austrian Society for Transplantation,
Transfusion and Genetics, and the Finnish Society of Hematology. He is coeditor of the books
”Myeloma and related disorders” Arnold, London, 2004 and “ Blodets sjukdomar (Blood
disorders) Studentlitteratur, Lund, 2025, and is author of the book “ In the shadow of the Nobel
Prize” , World Scientific publishing 2025. His research area is hematological malignancies with
a focus on translational research and clinical application of stem cell transplantation particularly
in multiple myeloma. He has published more than 350 scientific articles.
